Information About Sermorelin
What exactly is it?
Sermorelin is pharmaceutically classified as a “growth hormone secretagogue.” This amino-acid peptide stimulates the pituitary gland to produce and release human growth hormone. Because of it’s effect on human growth hormone levels, it has been a mainstay treatment option in anti-aging medicine since the 1990’s. Sermorelin combats common signs of aging such as fatigue, poor skin elasticity, weight gain, and mental fog.
What is Human Growth Hormone?
Human Growth Hormone (hGH) controls the growth and reproduction of cells in the human body. Not surprisingly, hGH is most prevalent during childhood and adolescence. By 40, your growth hormone level has essentially been cut in half. Research has revealed a direct correlation between human growth hormone decline and accelerated aging.
Why use sermorelin instead of hGH?
It is considered a much safer alternative to direct hGH administration. This is because it fosters healthy pituitary gland function and does not interfere with your body’s natural hormone regulatory functions. When you inject yourself with hGH directly, your body loses the ability to control the amount of the hormone. As the hormone builds inside your body, hGH levels can become dangerously high. Excessive hGH can lead to a rare form of diabetes, enlargement of the heart muscle (ventricular hypertrophy), or bone and tissue growth abnormalities. Since sermorelin still allows the pituitary gland to be in control of hGH release, overdose is very difficult to accomplish.
How is sermorelin administered?
Sermorelin is most commonly administered by injection into body fat (subcutaneous). This involves the use of a very small needle, much like a diabetic uses to self-administer insulin. Sermorelin is also available in the form of a troche (a dissolving oral tablet). Regardless of the method of administration, sermorelin is usually prescribed to be taken on a daily basis, just before bedtime, to mimic your body’s natural release of growth hormone.
What are the benefits of taking sermorelin?
- Increased energy
- Increased muscle mass
- Reduced body fat
- Improved immune function
- Enhanced duration and quality of sleep
- Improved endurance
- Elevated bone density
- Increased collagen production and tightening of skin
- Enhanced sense of well-being
- Increased sex-drive
When can I expect to see results?
As with any form of hormone replacement, results will not be immediate. The first 3 months of sermorelin therapy are generally referred to as a “loading phase.” During this time, you may not notice anything other than increased sleep quality and improved energy levels. By your 6th month of treatment, many of the benefits of sermorelin should be evident.
Are there any adverse effects associated with sermorelin therapy?
Negative side effects from sermorelin are extremely uncommon. The most common complaint is mild pain at the injection site. Because sermorelin enhances sleep quality, it can make you feel sleepy if taken during the day.
What will be monitored while on sermorelin?
Your labs will be checked periodically while you are on treatment. An indirect measure of hGH levels can be achieved by looking at insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1) levels. (hGH controls the release of IGF-1). We will also monitor your physical response to treatment at your follow-up office visits.
